Secret Agent

Here is a silly poem that I composed together with one of my elementary-grade students, Leo, using English words derived from the Latin word mittere (to send). Working from a limited list of words forces creativity. We used a Seussical rhyme scheme. SECRET AGENT by Dr. K and Leo I’m on a secret mission; I’ve […]

Docendo Discimus – By Teaching, We Learn

By Dr. Karen Wieland and James Currie More than HALF! Did you know that 29% of the words in the English language are derived directly from Latin words? Another 29% are derived from Old French, and the vast majority of these words also can be traced back to Latin. That means that nearly 58% of […]

Advice to Authors (Off the Top of My Head)

I teach a series of multi-week courses on Outschool called Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes. This winter, the students and I have been having fun creating poems featuring English words derived from specific Greek and Latin roots. In this piece involving words derived from caput, capitis (Latin = ‘head’), I once again […]

‘Patriot’ Politics at the Pub

We’ve been writing poetry using lists of words that share the same Latin or Greek root-word origin. I crafted this poem using words derived from the Latin verb iacere “to throw.” This piece is […]

Loved this class; excited to continue

Review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool;

My 11 and 13 year old kids loved this class! They have two different learning styles and both were engaged and interested. Dr. Wieland was knowledgeable and able to communicate that knowledge well. She was also great with mid week communication and I think it’s wonderful that the kids were given all the material worked on in class to continue reviewing on their own time. Both kids are excited to continu… Read more

My son gained confidence when seeing unfamiliar words

Review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 2: My son is a reluctant reader/language arts student who has gained confidence when seeing unfamiliar words, and learned a lot about how these root words are constructed in English.

Worth every penny

Doctor Wieland is a gifted teacher. My child went from Latin being her least favorite subject to her most favorite subject. She looks forward to every meeting with Doctor Wieland. Doctor Wieland has gone above and beyond to help our child prepare for the National Latin Exam. I have recommended her to anyone who will listen. Her expertise and obvious passion for teaching is worth every penny.

My son was...so motivated to work that I didn't have to remind him

My 11-yr old son is taking three online classes and this [Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1] was his favorite. He enjoyed preparing a slide each week [related to a chosen Latin or Greek root] to share with his class. I appreciated that he had a little assignment, but was so motivated to work on it that I didn’t have to remind him. He said that everyone was engaged and participated in the discussions. He is signed up for level 2 and says he wants to complete all … Read more

Great Energy – Positive Online Experience

My daughter has taken a few classes from Dr. Karen and she never disappoints. Great energy, positive online experience. Though I don’t listen in on the class, I hear saying different kids names to engage everybody. My daughter sees Latin everywhere now- grateful she has this opportunity. Thank you Dr. Karen!

BEST EDU PROF I'VE HAD AT ANY INSTITUTION

Dr. Wieland is by far the best prof I’ve had at Bona and the best Edu prof I’ve [had] at any institution. Her classes are demanding and worthwhile. I learned a lot. Assignments are not easy but will help students understand the course objectives. She is very willing to help students in anyway: office hours, study help, Skyping, even independent study courses.

Public Review of Vocabulary Building with Roots and Affixes – Prefixes

Outstanding, as all courses from the exceptional Dr. Karen Wieland. This is my third child, following through all available with Dr. Wieland. Dr. Wieland is credited not only for their language ski… Read more
