What Others Are Saying…

DEEP KNOWLEDGE

I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Karen Wieland since 2013. We worked as colleagues for two years in a university graduate literacy program. Under her mentorship as my department Chair, I grew in my knowledge of preparing future reading specialists/coaches to work in schools. I was privy to the great work that Karen did with our graduate literacy candidates in their clinical practicum course. She led students in their work with multiple children who were clients for the Reading Center that Karen ran. Karen’s knowledge of diagnostic assessment and remediation allowed our graduate literacy candidates to be well-prepared and competitive in the job market. Karen and I both spent time working with adult learners in a community literacy program and her knowledge of assessment and remediation for reading difficulties proved invaluable in that context as well. Karen and I have also worked collaboratively on multiple scholarly pursuits. Together, we obtained three research grants, which allow us to study the outcomes of different aspects of our work with graduate literacy students. Although we no longer work together, Karen and I have maintained close collegial ties as we work together in thinking about pedagogy, curriculum, and research. Karen’s deep knowledge of scholarship in literacy and teacher education more broadly are essential as we work toward preparing manuscripts for publication and presentations at conferences. Whether working with younger “kiddos” or young adult or adult learners, developing courses or curriculum, or working on scholarship for publication, Karen puts her all into every task she undertakes. Karen comes with my highest of recommendations.

You taught me how to read and write the way my brain works.

I would like to thank you for all the help you have given me and the time you took out of your day to help me get to where I am now. From Latin to French to Greek to old Germanic roots, you taught me how to read and write the way my brain works. Thank you for being the best teacher I ever had and will ever have and being there for times of struggle when I wish I were writing on paper with a pencil so I could crumple it up. I can now use the techniques you invested in me to improve my knowledge of the most challenging and sometimes confusing English language. I don’t know how I can put into words how thankful I am for spending time with me and sharing your hard work, earned knowledge.

A great turning point

My son was afforded the opportunity to work with Dr. Wieland individually with the Wilson Reading program. This structured, systematic, sequential, multisensory phonics approach provided him with many opportunities to increase his word recognition abilities. This was a great turning point for him and the results were amazing. In no time he was reading novels by Ray Bradbury and American short fiction. We went from this teachers telling us he might never read at grade level to their being impressed with his independent reading abilities. My son does better in all aspects of his school work for the simple reason that he can read the directions on tests as well as the material on the test itself. My husband and I are amazed at his increased fluency when we listen to him read and we are so proud to hear him have discussions with adults about The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, and other books he has read. We often wonder how were so lucky to be afforded this life changing opportunity for our son. We are so very thankful to Dr. Wieland for all that she has done for him.

We will be taking more in this series in the future! I like how this class is interactive and helps to show students how many things will work for them in the future in their own careers. MAJOR IMPACT ON MY ABILITY

The rigorous courses I took with Dr. Wieland reinforced my skills as a reading teacher by providing me with the tools I need to implement meaningful small group instruction in my classroom every day. [ . . . ] Without these classes, I would not have been as prepared as I was to take a job with a focus on small group reading instruction. Dr. Wieland had a major impact on my ability to teach reading and also inspired me as a teacher. She has a strong compassion and drive to influence young teachers.

Dr. Wieland is a fantastic, gifted educator

Public review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes series on Outschool:

A wonderful course. Excellent in all aspects. My daughter loved it, the children are offered superb opportunities for participation and for their own research. Invaluable. The children are so lucky to have access to this kind of etymological tuition and insight early in life. Very highly recommended. A whole new perspective on the English language for my daughter, adults around her remark on her vocabulary. Wish I had this offered to me, when I was nine years old. Dr. Wieland is a fantastic, gifted educator. ….I cannot say enough good things! – An opportunity not to miss. Rating 5/5
