MY SON RAISED HIS TEST SCORE BY 140 POINTSKaren is passionate about teaching! It is obvious to her students that she loves what she does, bringing much knowledge and enthusiasm to every session. Karen tutored my son for his SAT’s and with her guidance and support he raised his test score 140 points. The time restrictions with standardized testing is extremely challenging for students with dyslexia. My son is currently a honor student without support in high school. He was frustrated and struggling when it came to SAT/ACT. Karen spent time explaining how to prepare and take the test, as well as working with him to explore strategies that had him confidently walking into the test center, fully prepared. Great Sense of Humor and EnthusiasmI took a survey on Outschool the other day and they asked me what they could do to make Outschool even better. I said that they should clone Dr. Karen Wieland and have her teaching a lot more classes. I feel like a lot of other Outschool teachers could really benefit from taking a page out of your style guide. The way that you chat with the students and get them warmed up and comfortable, you really allow them to make their discoveries for themselves, and just the way that you maintain a great sense of humor and enthusiasm through the whole class/course is really exceptional.

BEST EDU PROF I'VE HAD AT ANY INSTITUTIONDr. Wieland is by far the best prof I’ve had at Bona and the best Edu prof I’ve [had] at any institution. Her classes are demanding and worthwhile. SIGNIFICANT PROGRESSWe became aware approximately two years ago that Dr. Wieland was working on level two Wilson Reading and that she was willing to involve my daughter in the work she was doing. Since that time, she has worked with my daughter, first specifically on the Wilson Reading [program], and then branching out to include improving her contextual comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary as well as her reading motivation. While my daughter does not yet read at grade level, she has made significant progress, with the support of Dr. Wieland. She is an Honor Roll student and she is able to keep up with her class, with accommodations.

Under her mentorship as my department Chair, I grew in my knowledge of preparing future reading specialists/coaches to work in schools. I worked with Karen Wieland for many years in the programs at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, as well as an affiliate, friend, and advisor, when I was teaching at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Niagara University, and when I was working in professional and semi-professional theater in Buffalo. Paraphrasing the words of opera singer Nadine Asher Washington, who workshopped with Karen’s students at St. Joe’s in 1990, Karen is the best teacher she’s known, particularly for young people; all came out in beautiful shape, with varied abilities to sing various genres of music, and with absolutely exceptional technique, freedom, and health.
