My two nine year olds . . . really enjoy this class

I would sign [my son] up for another class with this teacher.

Public review of Vocabulary Building with Latin & Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:

My 7th grade son took this class. I was not home most of the time so my review is from him. He really enjoyed this class. It was not too boring and he enjoyed the teacher. The teacher sometimes went over class time which as a mom I was happy to have her finish the lesson if kids presentations took a little long. My son has taken several classes through Outschool, but this is the only class that he and another classmate got together (virtually) to work on the homework together. Not because it was too hard, just because, and I thought it was great that they wanted to do this own their own. I would sign him up for another class with this teacher. Rating 5/5

EXCELLENT TEACHER!

Karen taught our son SAT writing skills, and grammar. She was thoroughly prepared for each lesson, and went above and beyond to help our son reach his fullest potential. Highly recommend!

Always Provides Positive Feedback

Our 9 year old opted to take her reading further & Dr Karen came highly recommended. It can be hard to gauge a child’s progress but if you measured against the tangibles of enjoyment & self-directed readiness to do homework, then Dr Karen’s lessons most definitely get 5 stars from us both. For us, connection is key to growing learning. Dr Karen naturally asked about interests & connected, maintaining interest & focus. Dr Karen’s managed to always find a sincere way to provide positive feedback too. We’d definitely recommend Dr Karen’s word study lessons.

Awesome job with adult dyslexia

Karen did a awesome job of using our time to identify my strengths and weaknesses to ensure she is deploying the most viable resources in the dyslexia field to maximize our efforts.

A great turning point

My son was afforded the opportunity to work with Dr. Wieland individually with the Wilson Reading program. This structured, systematic, sequential, multisensory phonics approach provided him with many opportunities to increase his word recognition abilities. This was a great turning point for him and the results were amazing. In no time he was reading novels by Ray Bradbury and American short fiction. We went from this teachers telling us he might never read at grade level to their being impressed with his independent reading abilities. My son does better in all aspects of his school work for the simple reason that he can read the directions on tests as well as the material on the test itself. My husband and I are amazed at his increased fluency when we listen to him read and we are so proud to hear him have discussions with adults about The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, and other books he has read. We often wonder how were so lucky to be afforded this life changing opportunity f… Read more

Makes Lessons Relevant

Hi, I’m 10 years old & decided to learn how to read with Dr Karen when I felt ready. Dr Karen is a great fit for me because she is fun, I enjoy talking with her & she makes our lessons relevant to me. I particularly enjoy the spelling dictation.

SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS

We became aware approximately two years ago that Dr. Wieland was working on level two Wilson Reading and that she was willing to involve my daughter in the work she was doing. Since that time, she has worked with my daughter, first specifically on the Wilson Reading [program], and then branching out to include improving her contextual comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary as well as her reading motivation. While my daughter does not yet read at grade level, she has made significant progress, with the support of Dr. Wieland. She is an Honor Roll student and she is able to keep up with her class, with accommodations.

My son was...so motivated to work that I didn't have to remind him

My 11-yr old son is taking three online classes and this [Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1] was his favorite. He enjoyed preparing a slide each week [related to a chosen Latin or Greek root] to share with his class. I appreciated that he had a little assignment, but was so motivated to work on it that I didn’t have to remind him. He said that everyone was engaged and participated in the discussions. He is signed up for level 2 and says he wants to complete all four levels available.

MY SON RAISED HIS TEST SCORE BY 140 POINTS

Karen is passionate about teaching! It is obvious to her students that she loves what she does, bringing much knowledge and  enthusiasm  to every session. Karen tutored my son for his SAT’s and with her guidance and support he raised his test score 140 points. The time restrictions with standardized testing is extremely challenging for students with dyslexia. My son is currently a honor student without support in high school. He was frustrated and struggling when it came to SAT/ACT. Karen spent time explaining how to prepare and take the test, as well as working with him to explore strategies that had him confidently walking into the test center, fully prepared. I can say, with much assurance, that I would recommend Karen to any student. Thanks Karen!

Fun atmosphere

Public review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes on Outschool:

My son thoroughly enjoyed his experience with Dr. Wieland’s class. Learning Latin and Greek roots using Google docs gave him the sense of teamwork with his fellow students. The fun atmosphere created by the instructor and students was a great benefit to remembering what had been taught during class. Rating 5/5
