I share my thoughts on teaching literacy, my growing love of Latin, and my fascination with the English language.

Classical Latin Instruction
Studying Latin language serves to build knowledge of morphemes (meaningful word parts) that comprise English words and words in Romance languages. Latin study thereby sets the stage for learning any of the Romance languages more quickly.

KNOWLEDGEABLE AND PASSIONATE TUTORKaren is passionate about what teaches and that passion passes onto her student. It is excited to work with Karen and feel her passion and to have that passion passed onto my daughter.
I like how this class is interactivePublic review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1, on Outschool:
My daughter enjoyed this class. Her understanding of roots and meanings has increased and therefore it has helped her reading comprehension skills. She really enjoyed this class. We will be taking more in this series in the future! I like how this class is interactive and helps to show students how many things will work for them in the future in their own careers. Dr. Wieland is very encouraging and supportive! Rating 5/5
BEST EDU PROF I'VE HAD AT ANY INSTITUTIONDr. Wieland is by far the best prof I’ve had at Bona and the best Edu prof I’ve [had] at any institution. Her classes are demanding and worthwhile. I learned a lot. Assignments are not easy but will help students understand the course objectives. She is very willing to help students in anyway: office hours, study help, Skyping, even independent study courses.
Incredibly Dedicated to her StudentsDr. Karen is incredibly dedicated to her students and always well-prepared with activities, lessons, and games to reinforce content. She has an interested and personable demeanor with kids and strives to get to know them and encourage them as individuals. She is an energetic and fun teacher.
I learned a lot of cool things-- a lot of cool words!Public review of Vocabulary Development with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:
My 13 year old son says, “I learned a lot of cool things– a lot of cool words. It was fun and the teacher is great!” Rating 5/5
Great Energy – Positive Online ExperienceMy daughter has taken a few classes from Dr. Karen and she never disappoints. Great energy, positive online experience. Though I don’t listen in on the class, I hear saying different kids names to engage everybody. My daughter sees Latin everywhere now- grateful she has this opportunity. Thank you Dr. Karen!
Always Making Learning FunDr. Karen keeps the class interesting and at a steady pace, always making learning a fun and enjoyable process.
Great Sense of Humor and EnthusiasmI took a survey on Outschool the other day and they asked me what they could do to make Outschool even better. I said that they should clone Dr. Karen Wieland and have her teaching a lot more classes. I feel like a lot of other Outschool teachers could really benefit from taking a page out of your style guide. The way that you chat with the students and get them warmed up and comfortable, you really allow them to make their discoveries for themselves, and just the way that you maintain a great sense of humor and enthusiasm through the whole class/course is really exceptional.
My kids both loved this class and both felt like they learned a lot
Review of Vocabulary Building with Latin & Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool: My kids both loved this class. When I asked them why, they both said independently that they loved Dr. Wieland. She was kind and engaging, and they both felt like they learned a lot.

My son gained confidence
My son is a reluctant reader/language arts student who has gained confidence when seeing unfamiliar words, and learned a lot about how these root words are constructed in English. Rating 5/5
GREAT LESSONDr. Karen was wonderful and I can tell she has a genuine interest in my daughter and her success.
Great ClassGreat class. Dr Karen spends a lot of time with her students.
You taught me how to read and write the way my brain works.I would like to thank you for all the help you have given me and the time you took out of your day to help me get to where I am now. From Latin to French to Greek to old Germanic roots, you taught me how to read and write the way my brain works. Thank you for being the best teacher I ever had and will ever have and being there for times of struggle when I wish I were writing on paper with a pencil so I could crumple it up. I can now use the techniques you invested in me to improve my knowledge of the most challenging and sometimes confusing English language. I don’t know how I can put into words how thankful I am for spending time with me and sharing your hard work, earned knowledge.
Learning Games to Play After ClassMy daughter loves this class and looks forward to it each week. Dr. Karen makes learning fun, and often hosts games that the kids enjoy playing after a good class. A big reason why our daughter enjoys Latin and does so well is Dr. Karen. Join this class!
HARD WORK, DEDICATION, EXPERIENCE[ . . . ] This process of data tracking was one that I took with me and still use today. Through careful reflection and meaningful decision-making, I am confident that my students are supported and enriched in the area of literacy. I would not have this confidence and knowledge without the guidance of Dr. Wieland. [ . . . ] Dr. Wieland’s continuous hard work, dedication, and array of experience is a reflection of what her graduate students become.
I would sign [my son] up for another class with this teacher.
Public review of Vocabulary Building with Latin & Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:
My 7th grade son took this class. I was not home most of the time so my review is from him. He really enjoyed this class. It was not too boring and he enjoyed the teacher. The teacher sometimes went over class time which as a mom I was happy to have her finish the lesson if kids presentations took a little long. My son has taken several classes through Outschool, but this is the only class that he and another classmate got together (virtually) to work on the homework together. Not because it was too hard, just because, and I thought it was great that they wanted to do this own their own. I would sign him up for another class with this teacher. Rating 5/5
EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGEVery good communications skills that so than an inexperienced vocalist can understand and relate to. Karen has been punctual and has followed through where commitments have been made.
Excellent ProgramI am really thrilled with your excellent program which I think will be very helpful to T. as she transitions into English school.
