I share my thoughts on teaching literacy, my growing love of Latin, and my fascination with the English language.

  • Classical Latin Instruction

Studying Latin language serves to build knowledge of morphemes (meaningful word parts) that comprise English words and words in Romance languages. Latin study thereby sets the stage for learning any of the Romance languages more quickly.

Friendly teacher made the material fun and intuitive

Fun atmosphere

Public review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes on Outschool:

My son thoroughly enjoyed his experience with Dr. Wieland’s class. Learning Latin and Greek roots using Google docs gave him the sense of teamwork with his fellow students. The fun atmosphere created by the instructor and students was a great benefit to remembering what had been taught during class. Rating 5/5

BEST EDU PROF I'VE HAD AT ANY INSTITUTION

Dr. Wieland is by far the best prof I’ve had at Bona and the best Edu prof I’ve [had] at any institution. Her classes are demanding and worthwhile. I learned a lot. Assignments are not easy but will help students understand the course objectives. She is very willing to help students in anyway: office hours, study help, Skyping, even independent study courses.

My son was...so motivated to work that I didn't have to remind him

My 11-yr old son is taking three online classes and this [Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1] was his favorite. He enjoyed preparing a slide each week [related to a chosen Latin or Greek root] to share with his class. I appreciated that he had a little assignment, but was so motivated to work on it that I didn’t have to remind him. He said that everyone was engaged and participated in the discussions. He is signed up for level 2 and says he wants to complete all four levels available.

Incredible teacher

Review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:

Dr. Karen is an incredible teacher. She is enthusiastic, incredibly knowledgable, funny, and passionate about words. My eleven-year-old son LOVED this class and learned so much. Even when we were on vacation, he begged to find a location so he could call in. When I asked him if he would like to do level two, he said, “I will do anything with Dr. Karen!” – Rating 5/5

DILIGENT, PREPARED, EXTREMELY HELPFUL

Karen customized each session based on some pre-session questions- you don’t get a ‘canned’ lesson with Karen. Very thoughtful, dedicated, and personable. She also provided parent with post- session updates, which were very helpful.

Dr. Wieland's etymology for children is fun, brilliant, seemingly effortlessly engaging

Public Review of Vocabulary Building with Roots and Affixes – Prefixes

Outstanding, as all courses from the exceptional Dr. Karen Wieland. This is my third child, following through all available with Dr. Wieland. These courses are an opportunity – deep literacy and love of language for life, my eldest is now starting higher education, and considering a career in law, my second is showing a talent in many areas and is excelling academically. Dr. Wieland is credited not only for their language skills and knowledge of Latin but for their academic drive, we, the parents, are deeply indebted. Dr. Wieland’s etymology for children is fun, brilliant, seemingly effortlessly engaging, with crosswords and fun homework which also teaches independence and learning skills and gives the children an opportunity to exceed the requirements, the atmosphere in the classes is sociable and friendly and learning is a joy. Karen manages to meet singers where they are and builds on that foundation with technique and musicality that she expresses clearly and concisely.

Karen Wieland is an encouraging, meticulous and musically gifted singer, voice teacher and choir director. I have had the pleasure of working with Karen on and off since high school as both a student and as an accompanist. I have witnessed her work with high school singers and choirs and have seen how she uses positive reinforcement to get the best out of them, no matter their skill level. She manages to meet them where they are and builds on that foundation with technique and musicality that she expresses clearly and concisely. Working with her as a vocal teacher and coach, she always had a keen knack of pinpointing any technical issues that were getting in the way of my achieving a free, fully resonant sound. Her vocal warm-ups were never one-size-fits-all. She would always gear them to the specific things I needed to work through. Above all, Karen has a warmth and genuineness that makes you feel free to be open both vocally and emotionally (which was particularly wonderful when she… Read more
