Classical Latin Instruction
Studying Latin language serves to build knowledge of morphemes (meaningful word parts) that comprise English words and words in Romance languages. Latin study thereby sets the stage for learning any of the Romance languages more quickly.

Karen manages to meet singers where they are and builds on that foundation with technique and musicality that she expresses clearly and concisely.
Karen Wieland is an encouraging, meticulous and musically gifted singer, voice teacher and choir director. I have had the pleasure of working with Karen on and off since high school as both a student and as an accompanist. I have witnessed her work with high school singers and choirs and have seen how she uses positive reinforcement to get the best out of them, no matter their skill level. She manages to meet them where they are and builds on that foundation with technique and musicality that she expresses clearly and concisely. Working with her as a vocal teacher and coach, she always had a keen knack of pinpointing any technical issues that were getting in the way of my achieving a free, fully resonant sound. Her vocal warm-ups were never one-size-fits-all. She would always gear them to the specific things I needed to work through. Above all, Karen has a warmth and genuineness that makes you feel free to be open both vocally and emotionally (which was particularly wonderful when she… Read more

Dr. Karen makes learning vocabulary interesting and funReview of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:
Dr. Karen is very experienced in teaching the subject matter and interacting with her students. She brings excitement to the class and makes learning vocabulary interesting and fun. My son loved attending class and is looking forward to joining the next level in the series. I strongly recommend this course. Rating: 5/5
Highly Recommended! This is my son’s second year taking Latin courses with Dr. Wieland. She is a fantastic instructor and he really enjoys the classes. They are rigorous yet fun and engaging. I believe he will be well prepared for high school level Latin courses in the future if he chooses to do so. Highly Recommended!
A great turning pointMy son was afforded the opportunity to work with Dr. Wieland individually with the Wilson Reading program. This structured, systematic, sequential, multisensory phonics approach provided him with many opportunities to increase his word recognition abilities. This was a great turning point for him and the results were amazing. In no time he was reading novels by Ray Bradbury and American short fiction. We went from this teachers telling us he might never read at grade level to their being impressed with his independent reading abilities. My son does better in all aspects of his school work for the simple reason that he can read the directions on tests as well as the material on the test itself. My husband and I are amazed at his increased fluency when we listen to him read and we are so proud to hear him have discussions with adults about The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, and other books he has read. We often wonder how were so lucky to be afforded this life changing opportunity f… Read more

My son took three Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes classes and enjoyed them all. He liked that the class was flexible, the teacher followed the lead of the students, and making slides each week. He felt that it was easy to participate in discussions and was never stressed about homework, even though there was an assignment each week. – Rating 5/5
Thank you for making this class so much funPublic review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes series on Outschool
. . . Also I want to thank you for making this class so much fun. I love the BINGO games and everything that you do to keep these kids interested while they are learning a lifelong skill. You are doing a lot of good in this world. Rating 5/5
Always Provides Positive FeedbackOur 9 year old opted to take her reading further & Dr Karen came highly recommended. It can be hard to gauge a child’s progress but if you measured against the tangibles of enjoyment & self-directed readiness to do homework, then Dr Karen’s lessons most definitely get 5 stars from us both. For us, connection is key to growing learning. Dr Karen naturally asked about interests & connected, maintaining interest & focus. Dr Karen’s managed to always find a sincere way to provide positive feedback too. We’d definitely recommend Dr Karen’s word study lessons.
Very Fun and Positive CultureMy daughter has learned so much in this class. It is something she looks forward to every week. The instructor has cultivated a very fun and positive culture.
I'VE SEEN MY DAUGHTER'S CONFIDENCE SPILL OVERKaren M. Wieland, Ph.D. has given my daughter the skills and confidence to look at a unknown word and decode it without the anxiety that she used to deal with when reading. I’ve seen that confidence spill over into her writing and spelling as well. These classes have been wonderful for her. Thank you, Dr. Wieland!
I like how this class is interactivePublic review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1, on Outschool:
My daughter enjoyed this class. Her understanding of roots and meanings has increased and therefore it has helped her reading comprehension skills. She really enjoyed this class. We will be taking more in this series in the future! I like how this class is interactive and helps to show students how many things will work for them in the future in their own careers. Dr. Wieland is very encouraging and supportive! Rating 5/5
With Karen's work, we (St. Joe's) became without a doubt the place to go to seek excellence in musical theater voice, in both classical levels, popular levels, and classical literature
I worked with Karen Wieland for many years in the programs at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, as well as an affiliate, friend, and advisor, when I was teaching at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Niagara University, and when I was working in professional and semi-professional theater in Buffalo. Paraphrasing the words of opera singer Nadine Asher Washington, who workshopped with Karen’s students at St. Joe’s in 1990, Karen is the best teacher she’s known, particularly for young people; all came out in beautiful shape, with varied abilities to sing various genres of music, and with absolutely exceptional technique, freedom, and health. Karen was the vocal coach for the St. Joe’s Swing Choir and for all the musicals I have done (more than twenty). With her work, we (St. Joe’s) became without a doubt the place to go to seek excellence in musical theater voice, in both classical levels, popular levels, and classical literature. Karen is versed in many languages; she can… Read more
