What Others Are Saying…
SIGNIFICANT PROGRESSWe became aware approximately two years ago that Dr. Wieland was working on level two Wilson Reading and that she was willing to involve my daughter in the work she was doing. Since that time, she has worked with my daughter, first specifically on the Wilson Reading [program], and then branching out to include improving her contextual comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary as well as her reading motivation. While my daughter does not yet read at grade level, she has made significant progress, with the support of Dr. Wieland. She is an Honor Roll student and she is able to keep up with her class, with accommodations.
Fun and Interactive courseExpect a fun and interactive course and to learn a lot of Latin. Dr. Karen is the best Latin teacher I’ve ever had; I love going to her class. The Blookets and the quizlets are also a great way to build memory. Dr. Karen really cares about us and wants us to have fun during class and she is generous with her time.
Learning Games to Play After ClassMy daughter loves this class and looks forward to it each week. Dr. Karen makes learning fun, and often hosts games that the kids enjoy playing after a good class. A big reason why our daughter enjoys Latin and does so well is Dr. Karen. Join this class!
Friendly teacher made the material fun and intuitivePublic review of Multsensory Phonics on Outschool:
My daughter loved this class. The teacher was friendly and really made the material fun and intuitive. My daughter does not warm to classes easy so I was thrilled that she liked this one and wants to keep going with it. Rating 5/5
Very helpfulReview of Multisensory Phonics, Level 5 on Outschool:
My daughter has had several multisensory phonics classes with Dr. Karen and enjoyed them very much. The teacher has been very helpful! – Rating 5/5
Blown away by her persistence and creativityMy daughter got so much out of her sessions with Dr. Karen. We were blown away with her persistence and creativity. She was willing to change things up until she found the winning formula. Dr. Karen obviously loves her work. She has a passion for raising readers. Rating: 5 / 5
Fabulous teacherReview of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 3 on Outschool:
Fabulous teacher and valuable vocabulary building content! Rating: 5/5
I would sign [my son] up for another class with this teacher.
Public review of Vocabulary Building with Latin & Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:
My 7th grade son took this class. I was not home most of the time so my review is from him. He really enjoyed this class. It was not too boring and he enjoyed the teacher. The teacher sometimes went over class time which as a mom I was happy to have her finish the lesson if kids presentations took a little long. My son has taken several classes through Outschool, but this is the only class that he and another classmate got together (virtually) to work on the homework together. Not because it was too hard, just because, and I thought it was great that they wanted to do this own their own. I would sign him up for another class with this teacher. Rating 5/5
KNOWLEDGEABLE AND COMPASSIONATEMy 15 year old grand daughter has a reading disability diagnosed in second grade, for which a systematic, structured, phonics based approach to remediation was required. She has been working with Dr. Wieland for approximately 2 1/2 years using the Wilson Reading system to develop decoding skills and vocabulary, content and contextual exercises to improve her fluency and overall reading abilities. This type of specific targeted one to one approach to her reading disability was not available to her in school. She has made significant progress thorough her work with Dr. Wieland improving her reading ability and in the ability to achieve at grade level in content areas. Dr. Wieland is a knowledgeable and compassionate educator and makes the tutoring experience a positive one. I am also familiar with Dr. Wieland as a volunteered as a tutor through Literacy Volunteers of Cattaraugus County and she brings the same talents and dedication to working with adults with literacy issues. Her ex… Read more
Incredible teacherReview of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:
Dr. Karen is an incredible teacher. She is enthusiastic, incredibly knowledgable, funny, and passionate about words. My eleven-year-old son LOVED this class and learned so much. Even when we were on vacation, he begged to find a location so he could call in. When I asked him if he would like to do level two, he said, “I will do anything with Dr. Karen!” – Rating 5/5
Great Sense of Humor and EnthusiasmI took a survey on Outschool the other day and they asked me what they could do to make Outschool even better. I said that they should clone Dr. Karen Wieland and have her teaching a lot more classes. I feel like a lot of other Outschool teachers could really benefit from taking a page out of your style guide. The way that you chat with the students and get them warmed up and comfortable, you really allow them to make their discoveries for themselves, and just the way that you maintain a great sense of humor and enthusiasm through the whole class/course is really exceptional.
Dr. Wieland's etymology for children is fun, brilliant, seemingly effortlessly engagingPublic Review of Vocabulary Building with Roots and Affixes – Prefixes
Outstanding, as all courses from the exceptional Dr. Karen Wieland. This is my third child, following through all available with Dr. Wieland. These courses are an opportunity – deep literacy and love of language for life, my eldest is now starting higher education, and considering a career in law, my second is showing a talent in many areas and is excelling academically. Dr. Wieland is credited not only for their language skills and knowledge of Latin but for their academic drive, we, the parents, are deeply indebted. Dr. Wieland’s etymology for children is fun, brilliant, seemingly effortlessly engaging, with crosswords and fun homework which also teaches independence and learning skills and gives the children an opportunity to exceed the requirements, the atmosphere in the classes is sociable and friendly and learning is a joy. Dr. Wieland is a gifted, exceptional educator, one of the most memorable and the very b… Read more
DEEP KNOWLEDGEI have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Karen Wieland since 2013. We worked as colleagues for two years in a university graduate literacy program. Under her mentorship as my department Chair, I grew in my knowledge of preparing future reading specialists/coaches to work in schools. I was privy to the great work that Karen did with our graduate literacy candidates in their clinical practicum course. She led students in their work with multiple children who were clients for the Reading Center that Karen ran. Karen’s knowledge of diagnostic assessment and remediation allowed our graduate literacy candidates to be well-prepared and competitive in the job market. Karen and I both spent time working with adult learners in a community literacy program and her knowledge of assessment and remediation for reading difficulties proved invaluable in that context as well. Karen and I have also worked collaboratively on multiple scholarly pursuits. Together, we obtained three research grants, whic… Read more
Very engaging class; lots of class participationPublic review of Vocabulary Building with Latin & Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:
Just finished the class and my son asked if we can sign up for level 2! Very engaging class, lots of class participation and fun home exercises. We will be signing up for the next course! Rating 5/5
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AT ITS BESTAs facilitator, Karen coordinated the monthly meetings and facilitated book selection and discussion. The group involved 10 active members. Karen’s book recommendations were always outstanding. Her vast knowledge of reading research always resulted in some very interesting books for the group to read and discuss. Consequently, discussions were always so rich with information. Our book group learned a great deal about teaching reading from Karen and from each other. This was professional development at its best.
Dr. Karen really succeeds in individualizing her assignments to address her students needsReview of Multisensory Phonics for Word Recognition (Decoding) & Spelling (Encoding)- Level VIII: Dr. Karen really succeeds in individualizing her assignments to address her students needs. I have been very pleased with the progress my son has made. It has led to increased confidence.

My two nine year olds . . . really enjoy this classPublic review of Multisensory Phonics, Level IV on Outschool:
My two nine year olds on different reading levels really enjoy this class. The class material is well laid out and it is practical. Rating: 5 / 5
Brilliant Wilson Reading tutorDr. Karen has been instrumental part of my son’s education through her one on one tutoring with [him]. She maintains a level of efficiency that is fueled by her obvious work ethic and her professional concern for her students’ progress. When dealing with Dr. Karen, it is immediately evident that she has a love for the profession and a sincere interest in and concern for the students. Furthermore, she spends many hours with an individual student’s tutoring and working on reading strategies on her own time to help less capable readers. Dr. Karen has helped my son through the Wilson Reading System more than I could have ever imagined.
Highly Recommended! This is my son’s second year taking Latin courses with Dr. Wieland. She is a fantastic instructor and he really enjoys the classes. They are rigorous yet fun and engaging. I believe he will be well prepared for high school level Latin courses in the future if he chooses to do so. Highly Recommended!
It's a great learning environment!
Review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 2 on Outschool: This is our second session with Dr. Karen. I wanted my kiddo to learn lots of definitions by knowing roots and she has also learned how to spell more words. It’s a great learning environment! Thanks Dr. Karen! Rating 5/5
