Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes

February 20, 2024 By Karen Wieland

Secret Agent

Here is a silly poem that I composed together with one of my elementary-grade students, Leo, using English words derived from the Latin word mittere (to send). Working from a limited list of words forces creativity. We used a Seussical rhyme scheme. SECRET AGENT by Dr. K and Leo I’m on a secret mission; I’ve […]

Advice to Authors (Off the Top of My Head)

I teach a series of multi-week courses on Outschool called Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes. This winter, the students and I have been having fun creating poems featuring English words derived from specific Greek and Latin roots. In this piece involving words derived from caput, capitis (Latin = ‘head’), I once again […]

‘Patriot’ Politics at the Pub

I’ve been doing something creative with students in my Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes courses on Outschool. We’ve been writing poetry using lists of words that share the same Latin or Greek root-word origin. I crafted this poem using words derived from the Latin verb iacere “to throw.” This piece is […]

SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS

We became aware approximately two years ago that Dr. Wieland was working on level two Wilson Reading and that she was willing to involve my daughter in the work she was doing. Since that time, she has worked with my daughter, first specifically on the Wilson Reading [program], and then branching out to include improving her contextual comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary as well as her reading motivation. While my daughter does not yet read at grade level, she has made significant progress, w… Read more

Incredibly Dedicated, Caring, Friendly

Dr. Karen is an exceptional teacher. I would highly recommend her to any parent seeking foundational instruction spelling and reading. She is incredibly dedicated, caring, friendly, engaged with her student and really knows her stuff! It’s quite clear that, for her, this teaching is a calling rather than an extra source of income. My daughter actually looks forward to her phonics sessions with Dr. Karen. That says a lot. In two weeks of intense sessions, we have already noticed a distinct improv… Read more

DEEP KNOWLEDGE

I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Karen Wieland since 2013. We worked as colleagues for two years in a university graduate literacy program. Under her mentorship as my department Chair, I grew in my knowledge of preparing future reading specialists/coaches to work in schools. I was privy to the great work that Karen did with our graduate literacy candidates in their clinical practicum course. She led students in their work with multiple children who were clients for the Reading Center that… Read more

Public review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes series on Outschool:

A wonderful course. Excellent in all aspects. My daughter loved it, the children are offered superb opportunities for participation and for their own research. Invaluable. The children are so lucky to have access to this kind of etymological tuition and insight early in life. Very highly recommended. A whole new perspective on the English language for my daughter, adults around her remark on her voca… Read more

Worth every penny

Doctor Wieland is a gifted teacher. My child went from Latin being her least favorite subject to her most favorite subject. She looks forward to every meeting with Doctor Wieland. Doctor Wieland has gone above and beyond to help our child prepare for the National Latin Exam. I have recommended her to anyone who will listen. Her expertise and obvious passion for teaching is worth every penny.
