Diagnostic Literacy Assessment & Evaluation

Diagnostic literacy assessment-student in need of help

Let me discover your child’s strengths and determine the exact types of instruction needed to foster academic progress.

My Diagnostic Assessment & Evaluation Process

A comprehensive literacy diagnostic assessment and evaluation requires me to work between 6-10 hours with an individual. During this collaborative time, and in my subsequent report, I focus on obtaining answers to five specific questions (Kibby, 1995). These questions are:

  1. What are the individual’s current levels of achievement and performance in reading, writing, and spelling, and are these levels satisfactory?
  2. What reading, writing, and spelling skills and strategies are strengths for the individual, and which are limitations?
  3. Are there any factors that might be associated with the individual’s literacy performance?
  4. What instructional goals are appropriate for the individual at this time?
  5. What instructional methods, materials, and milieus best facilitate the individual’s learning?

In order to gain information to answer these questions, I use several formal and informal tests as well as many diagnostic teaching techniques, depending on the age of the individual and the purposes for the evaluation.

  • Teenage student in literacy lessonStandardized, norm-referenced test of reading achievement
  • Standardized, norm-referenced test of receptive vocabulary knowledge
  • Standardized, norm-referenced test of expressive vocabulary knowledge
  • Standardized, norm-referenced test of general intellectual ability
  • If the client is an emergent reader, informal assessment of concepts of print, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and knowledge of the alphabetic system
  • Informal assessment of sight vocabulary knowledge, graphophonic knowledge, and word recognition strategies used in isolation and in context.
  • Informal assessment of spelling development
  • Informal assessment of oral and silent reading fluency and comprehension
  • Informal assessment of writing skills and strategies
  • Informal assessment of test-taking strategies
Informal assessment of individual’s response to various instructional approaches and materials, in order to inform recommendations
