What Others Are Saying…
SURPASSED MY EXPECTATIONSI always felt challenged yet equally supported by all my professors. Then, I met Dr. Wieland, and she surpassed my expectations even higher for exceptional faculty. I experienced how much passion she puts into her practice! [ . . . ] Dr. Wieland’s dedication, knowledge, and guidance helped me transition from a student who was eager to make a difference in the world to a professional who is prepared to meet the needs of young learners.
MAJOR IMPACT ON MY ABILITYThe rigorous courses I took with Dr. Wieland reinforced my skills as a reading teacher by providing me with the tools I need to implement meaningful small group instruction in my classroom every day. [ . . . ] Without these classes, I would not have been as prepared as I was to take a job with a focus on small group reading instruction. Dr. Wieland had a major impact on my ability to teach reading and also inspired me as a teacher. She has a strong compassion and drive to influence young teachers.
Incredibly Dedicated, Caring, FriendlyDr. Karen is an exceptional teacher. I would highly recommend her to any parent seeking foundational instruction spelling and reading. She is incredibly dedicated, caring, friendly, engaged with her student and really knows her stuff! It’s quite clear that, for her, this teaching is a calling rather than an extra source of income. My daughter actually looks forward to her phonics sessions with Dr. Karen. That says a lot. In two weeks of intense sessions, we have already noticed a distinct improvement. This was a great investment of time and money!
KNOWLEDGEABLE AND COMPASSIONATEMy 15 year old grand daughter has a reading disability diagnosed in second grade, for which a systematic, structured, phonics based approach to remediation was required. She has been working with Dr. Wieland for approximately 2 1/2 years using the Wilson Reading system to develop decoding skills and vocabulary, content and contextual exercises to improve her fluency and overall reading abilities. This type of specific targeted one to one approach to her reading disability was not available to her in school. She has made significant progress thorough her work with Dr. Wieland improving her reading ability and in the ability to achieve at grade level in content areas. Dr. Wieland is a knowledgeable and compassionate educator and makes the tutoring experience a positive one. I am also familiar with Dr. Wieland as a volunteered as a tutor through Literacy Volunteers of Cattaraugus County and she brings the same talents and dedication to working with adults with literacy issues. Her ex… Read more
SIGNIFICANT PROGRESSWe became aware approximately two years ago that Dr. Wieland was working on level two Wilson Reading and that she was willing to involve my daughter in the work she was doing. Since that time, she has worked with my daughter, first specifically on the Wilson Reading [program], and then branching out to include improving her contextual comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary as well as her reading motivation. While my daughter does not yet read at grade level, she has made significant progress, with the support of Dr. Wieland. She is an Honor Roll student and she is able to keep up with her class, with accommodations.
Always Provides Positive FeedbackOur 9 year old opted to take her reading further & Dr Karen came highly recommended. It can be hard to gauge a child’s progress but if you measured against the tangibles of enjoyment & self-directed readiness to do homework, then Dr Karen’s lessons most definitely get 5 stars from us both. For us, connection is key to growing learning. Dr Karen naturally asked about interests & connected, maintaining interest & focus. Dr Karen’s managed to always find a sincere way to provide positive feedback too. We’d definitely recommend Dr Karen’s word study lessons.
Awesome job with adult dyslexiaKaren did a awesome job of using our time to identify my strengths and weaknesses to ensure she is deploying the most viable resources in the dyslexia field to maximize our efforts.
Karen gave me a rock solid foundation in voice and that experience gave me a love for voice that I carry with me today
If you are fortunate enough to have Karen as a teacher, count yourself as one of the lucky ones. I have been actively pursuing and succeeding in a professional entertainment career for the better of my life and have had many MANY amazing teachers and I count her as one of those amazing teachers and I don’t just mean in voice. Not ONLY does she have the expertise of the voice and how to overcome your personal, unique vocal issues, but her caring teaching style and way of giving you the right information needed at the right time in the right moments make her a great choice for an amazing experience. She gave me a rock solid foundation in voice and that experience gave me a love for voice that I carry with me today. Sadly for me Karen isn’t in NYC because if she were I would still be working with her today as one of the secret weapons in my arsenal to my continued success in this business. Do walk, RUN to a lesson today and see if I’m joking. Believe me, i’m not. 😉 Good luck on… Read more
I like how this class is interactivePublic review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1, on Outschool:
My daughter enjoyed this class. Her understanding of roots and meanings has increased and therefore it has helped her reading comprehension skills. She really enjoyed this class. We will be taking more in this series in the future! I like how this class is interactive and helps to show students how many things will work for them in the future in their own careers. Dr. Wieland is very encouraging and supportive! Rating 5/5
Truly Joyous ExperienceAs always, a truly joyous experience, this is my third child climbing up through all the levels of the fantastic Latin and Greek Roots courses with Dr. Wieland. Two others have completed all available! This course, for my youngest, to be followed by Dr Wieland’s Latin courses. Deep literacy skills for life, with fun puzzles and crosswords, and a wonderful classroom environment always, leaving the children with a real sense of achievement and contribution. We feel incredibly lucky to have found the superb courses with Dr. Wieland saw the benefits paid out to the two older children in their highschool grades and in extra-curriculars, their ability to decode languages and to write very well has already opened doors.
So many more words make sense to him now!Public comment about Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 2 on Outschool:
By the way, as I had mentioned before, [my son] is dyslexic, and thus has some difficulty with written work. I signed him up for the 2nd part of this class because he told me I had to. He told me that so many more words make sense to him now because he can see how they add up. He thinks more mathematically so these classes have put pieces together for him that he was unable to connect before. This is the first language class we have done that he has personally requested to continue! So, thank you for all you are doing. It is making a difference for him, and he is enjoying it!
Great Sense of Humor and EnthusiasmI took a survey on Outschool the other day and they asked me what they could do to make Outschool even better. I said that they should clone Dr. Karen Wieland and have her teaching a lot more classes. I feel like a lot of other Outschool teachers could really benefit from taking a page out of your style guide. The way that you chat with the students and get them warmed up and comfortable, you really allow them to make their discoveries for themselves, and just the way that you maintain a great sense of humor and enthusiasm through the whole class/course is really exceptional.
The teacher followed the lead of the studentsReview of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 4 on Outschool:
My son took three Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes classes and enjoyed them all. He liked that the class was flexible, the teacher followed the lead of the students, and making slides each week. He felt that it was easy to participate in discussions and was never stressed about homework, even though there was an assignment each week. – Rating 5/5
You taught me how to read and write the way my brain works.I would like to thank you for all the help you have given me and the time you took out of your day to help me get to where I am now. From Latin to French to Greek to old Germanic roots, you taught me how to read and write the way my brain works. Thank you for being the best teacher I ever had and will ever have and being there for times of struggle when I wish I were writing on paper with a pencil so I could crumple it up. I can now use the techniques you invested in me to improve my knowledge of the most challenging and sometimes confusing English language. I don’t know how I can put into words how thankful I am for spending time with me and sharing your hard work, earned knowledge.

UNPARALLELED MENTORSHIPDr. Wieland is a professor unparalleled in her professionalism, mentorship, and expertise in the field. [ . . . ] I credit the challenge, rigor, and authenticity of Dr. Wieland’s instruction as a leading factor in my success following my graduate work [ . . . ]. Her words of encouragement and suggestions for improvement were the most valuable resource for me as I developed my craft as an educator. [ . . . ] The skill and knowledge I gained from her continue to shape my approach to education. I value the confidence she instilled in me.

I cannot say enough good things!Public review of Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes, Level 1 on Outschool:
A wonderful course. Excellent in all aspects. My daughter loved it, the children are offered superb opportunities for participation and for their own research. Invaluable. The children are so lucky to have access to this kind of etymological tuition and insight early in life. Very highly recommended. A whole new perspective on the English language for my daughter, adults around her remark on her vocabulary. Wish I had this offered to me, when I was nine years old. Dr. Wieland is a fantastic, gifted educator. ….I cannot say enough good things! – An opportunity not to miss. Rating: 5 / 5

Dr. Wieland is great! She makes class fun and sends material for kids to keep practicing. My son enjoyed the class and was encouraged to speak Latin and not just learn what the words mean. Rating 5/5
